Finally I got it Generac 5698 GP5000 6,250 Watt 389cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator (CARB Compliant).Works well but is loud and not the cleanest power.By Gionni C.This is a very well made unit which looks nice, starts easy and runs very well. It is very loud so your neighbors may object if you were to use it through the night, especially if they were sweating with no AC. I did notice that two LED displays, one on an alarm clock and one on a home theater PC(the display is always on, even with the PC off) didn't look right after being powered by this unit. I unplugged them, waited a half hour and plugged them back in and there was no permanent damage, so no problem. But I wouldn't try running sensitive equipment with this unit, say a computer or large screen display. Since my house did not have an easy or logical place to put the transfer switch, this panel was the best choice for me. I installed it myself and I am very pleased with the operation of this switch. I sold the other transfer switch on ebay ($275.00) to help offset the cost. Generac needs to give you a choice of what switch/panel you want when you buy a generator. If you need to upgrade your service panel and don't have a generator, I would still consider this one as you have the option to add a genset later on. It has a wire "latch hook" to keep the plug from falling out, but no info on how to properly use it. I had difficuly locating the correct male plug with a "straight" out feature since most are 90 degrees. It would have been nice to have the male plug-end supplied with the generator. I finally found one at Grainger (cost over one hundred bucks, but it's top notch). The person that answered said referred me to a local service center, but the technicians said said it was a problem with the heater that I was using to test the generator. I took it back home and tested is with another heater, a hair dryer, a circular saw, and a freezer (not all at once) and it kept hunting. I called again, and Generac technical support said I should try another repair shop. So far, I've invested another $20 in gas and 4 hours of my time trying to get this generator to run. OK I just got Generac Guardian Series 5883 10,000 Watt Air-Cooled Liquid Propane/Natural Gas Powered Standby Generator Without Transfer Switch (CARB Compliant).Not even a little bit impressedBy Glen M. TernesI purchased the 10kw model 5883 on September 1 2010. Ran for exactly 6.8 hours before it crashed and burned (literally). The stator and the rotor melted down completely. Only had about 400 watts load on the generator at the time. It is now October 4th (33 day later) and I still don't have the generator repaired. The nearest "Qualified" service center is over 100 miles away and since I didn't purchase the Generator from them, they have been very unresponsive. I have spent at least 12 hours on the phone with Generac Technical support just to try get someone out to look at the generator. I am a generator Technician with over 30 years experience and I knew exactly what the problem was but Generac would not allow me to work on the unit, lest they would void the warranty.
